Rohit Sharma, one of India's most celebrated cricketers, has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket. The announcement comes amid widespread speculation about his potential removal as Test captain following a series of underwhelming performances in recent matches.

The veteran batter shared the news through his official Instagram handle, bringing an end to a distinguished Test career. His decision marks the close of a significant chapter in Indian cricket, as fans and teammates reflect on his contributions to the longest format of the game.

Rohit Sharma to Continue Playing ODIs After Announcing Test Retirement

Indian cricket star Rohit Sharma has officially announced his retirement from Test cricket but confirmed that he will continue to represent India in One Day Internationals. Fondly known as “The Hitman,” Rohit expressed gratitude for the love and support he has received throughout his Test career. His decision suggests he is likely to lead India in the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to be held in South Africa.

Rohit had already stepped away from T20 Internationals following India’s triumphant campaign in the 2024 T20 World Cup. He is currently featuring for Mumbai Indians in the ongoing IPL 2025 season.

Rohit Sharma leaves behind a solid Test legacy, having scored 4,301 runs in 67 matches at an average of 40.57. Since his debut against the West Indies in 2013, he notched up 12 centuries and 18 fifties. As Test captain, he led India in 24 matches, scoring at an average of 30.58 with four hundreds. However, a dip in form during the latter half of 2024, combined with series defeats to New Zealand and Australia, added pressure on his captaincy and preceded this retirement decision.

Rohit Sharma’s participation in the upcoming England tour had long been under speculation following his underwhelming performances during the Australia series. With earlier reports suggesting he might be replaced as captain, the official announcement of his retirement from Test cricket now confirms India’s need to appoint a new leader in the longest format.

Jasprit Bumrah, who captained the side in Rohit's absence during the Australia tour, has emerged as a leading contender. Alongside him, young opener Shubman Gill is also being considered a potential candidate to take over the Test captaincy.
