LORD'S, JUNE 11 – South Africa have broken their ICC title drought in spectacular fashion, defeating Australia in the 2025 World Test Championship Final to lift their first global trophy since 1998.
In a thrilling clash at the Home of Cricket, the Proteas chased down 282 on the fourth morning to secure a dramatic seven-wicket win. Aiden Markram was the hero with a masterful 136, supported by skipper Temba Bavuma’s gritty 66. Kyle Verreynne hit the winning runs to etch South Africa’s name on the WTC trophy for the very first time.
It wasn’t all smooth sailing. After bowling out Australia for 212 in the first innings, South Africa stumbled to 138 all out. Australia looked in control, especially when they reduced themselves to 73/7 in their second innings. But Mitchell Starc’s unbeaten 58 from No.9 pushed them to 207, setting up a tense final innings.
The Proteas rose to the occasion. Markram’s century anchored the chase, while Bavuma showed leadership under pressure. The result not only gave South Africa the coveted Test mace but also ended a 27-year wait for an ICC title.
Proteas Rise in Rankings After WTC Glory
South Africa’s triumph has also shaken up the ICC Test Team Rankings. Coming into the final in third place with 111 rating points, the Proteas’ win over No.1-ranked Australia earned them three crucial points—enough to leapfrog England (113) and move into second place.
Australia, despite the loss, stay on top with 123 points. England slip to third as a result of South Africa’s rise.
