South Africa’s ICC Title Drought: Is It Finally Coming to an End?

14th June 2025

Many fans often believe South Africa has never tasted success at the ICC level, but that’s not entirely accurate. The Proteas did win an ICC trophy once, way back in 1998, when they lifted the ICC KnockOut Trophy (now known as the Champions Trophy) in Bangladesh. That remains their only major ICC title to date.

A Journey of Near Misses and Heartbreak

Since their return to international cricket in 1992 — after years of isolation due to apartheid — South Africa’s story at World Cups has been one of immense promise, marred by heartbreak.

In their debut World Cup in 1992, they reached the semifinals but were controversially knocked out due to a rain rule against England in Sydney — a moment that still stings.

Then came the 1999 World Cup semifinal, where they tied against Australia but exited the tournament because of an inferior Super Six finish — one of cricket’s most dramatic finishes.

So Close, Yet So Far: 2015 & 2024

In 2015, another chance slipped through their fingers as New Zealand edged past them in a thriller of a semifinal. Fast forward to 2024, and South Africa reached their first-ever ICC T20 World Cup final. At Barbados, they came within touching distance of history, only to fall short by just 7 runs against India.

The 2025 WTC Final: Is This The Moment?

And now, here we are in 2025, and the Proteas are once again on the cusp of glory — this time in the World Test Championship Final against Australia at Lord’s.

After three days of intense battle, South Africa are in a commanding position: 213/2 in their second innings, chasing a target of 282. They need just 69 more runs with 8 wickets in hand.

Can they finally break the curse and lift their second ICC title, 27 years after their first?

Stay tuned, as Day 4 could bring a historic chapter in South African cricket. Will this be the day they silence the ghosts of the past?
